Materials Required. Dressings for the Hog are very varied and each angler has his own favourite, I know I’ve loads of ‘em for varying situations. However I’ve done very well with this one on a wide range of waters. Hook; Partridge Wet Fly Supreme for sub surface, or Dry Fly Supreme for on the top size 10-14. (Barbless lovers can use the excellent Wet Fly Sproat)
Tie in the Glow Brite Butt running a third of the way up the hook, then run tying thread down hook covering the tag end to secure
Take a small pinch of deer hair cut tight to the skin (to prevent cut ends contaminating next time you use it). Line up tips by eye (I tend not to use hair stacker for small flies like this).
Set a length to hook (approx 3 to 5mm beyond bend depending on desired finish) lock bunch in 'holding' hand and trim waste ends at a slight angle leaving 2mm to catch in (saves time and makes for a much neater finish). Pinch and loop in place.
Tie in/covering butt ends tightly
Form dubbing ‘rope’ being careful not to make too big a ‘lump’ but no real need to be too shy with materials either (you can always brush it out later)
Take another small bunch of hair and repeat previous process. Set hair at about 45 degree angle from previous bunch
Tie off hair ends as before
Repeat dubbing process
Repeat wing process (I tend to tie in min three ‘bunches’ although for a real ‘high riding busy fly I’ve gone as many as five, be careful not to overload hook if you do this keeping bunches more ‘sparse’)
There’s a few ways to finish the head, original called for a muddler head but a ‘soft muddler’ dubbed head can be equally effective and the finish I prefer so simply dub in head and whip finish.
